London Fashion Week 2016 kicks off

Hello! I take you down to London, the kindest, gentlest and shortest fashion week of the Big Four.

Things got underway unofficially last night (just around the time the models were stepping off the catwalk at Marc Jacobs) with a Champagne coupe or two when the great and the good of the British industry came out for a Downing Street bash hosted by Theresa May, the new prime minister.

The night was unseasonably hot, but Britain’s leader looked impeccably cool as she held court in a crisp, oversize white shirt and sash by the duo Palmer Harding, the better to communicate the message: Despite Brexit, as the curtain comes up on a new season, London is open for business.

New York Fashion Week ends with Marc Jacobs controversy

Thursday was the ninth and final day of New York Fashion Week for the spring/summer 2017 season. As is customary, the last day of festivities featured the Marc Jacobs runway show; the designer debuted looks at the Hammerstein Ballroom that were "a mix of raver and Harajuku schoolgirl, with a hint of royalty," The Cut wrote.

The Marc Jacobs show came under a bit of fire, however, for its use of fake dreadlocks — spun out of wool and hand-dyed by a mother-daughter Etsy team — to style white models. While the show's hairstylist Guido Palau told The Cut that the look was not inspired by Rasta culture, the frustration was summed up by several Twitter users:

The high-profile show featured celebrity models like Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid, Karlie Kloss, and Adriana Lima. Nigerians present there were: Efe Tommy, Uche Nnaji among others.

Judge Rules Against Facebook’s Attempt to Block Lawsuit Over Naked Picture on “Shame Page”

Facebook is facing yet another lawsuit after the company lost a legal bid to stop a 14-year-old girl from suing over a naked picture of her that was posted on a ‘shame page’ on the site,” the Guardian reports.
On Monday, a judge in Belfast ruled against the social media platform’s attempt to block the suit, therefore, the Northern Ireland girl will be allowed to sue Facebook over the photo.
The girl is also taking legal action against the individual accused of posting/sharing the picture, which is being described as “an act of revenge,” reports state. She will apparently seek damages for misuse of private information, negligence and a breach of the U.K.’s Data Protection Act.

According to the teen’s legal team, the platform had the power to block the republication of the image by using a tracking process to identify the image. However, Facebook’s lawyers argued that they always took the picture down when it was notified, so the claim for damages should be thrown out.
According to reports, the company has also argued that it is a technology platform, and not a publisher. Therefore, it is not fully responsible for the content shared and posted on its site. The case against the platform and the man accused of posting the image will move to trial at a later date, reports state.

Bella Hadid trips on catwalk at New York Fashion Week

Hadid, who was wearing a sequined black dress and six-inch platforms, looked embarrassed as she tried to gracefully fall to the ground.

The New York Fashion Week flub was captured by photographers, who shot every frame of the nasty spill.

Onlookers in the audience — many of whom grabbed their phones to record it all — even looked stunned at the snafu.

While Hadid fell to the floor, some of her more experienced friends managed to stay upright, according to the Daily Mail.

Kendall Jenner and Joan Smalls walked without issue.

But Hadid is not the only model to take a tumble on the catwalk.
Queen of the runway, British glamazon Naomi Campbell, famously tripped while walking for Vivienne Westwood in Paris in 1993.

Former First Lady Patience Jonathan claims $15m Frozen in her bank accounts are for medical bills, personal expenses

Former first lady, Patience Jonathan, has written a letter to the EFCC explaining how $15 million entered her account. In a letter with reference number GA/Abibo/00226/2016, written by her lawyers, Granville Abibo (SAN) and Co, and addressed to the Acting Chairman of the EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, the former first lady said the $15 million which has been seized by the antigraft agency, was for her medical bills and other personal expenses, according to Sahara Reporters...

"It is noteworthy to emphasise that the said accounts, which were in US dollar denomination, were card-based accounts and our client is the sole signatory to these accounts. However, our client has been operating the said accounts using the cards for her medical bill payments and purchases for her private purposes without any let or hindrance. Our client was therefore surprised when the said cards stop functioning on July 7, 2016, or thereabout. Our client immediately, thereupon, contacted Skye Bank Plc through our solicitors. It was only then that the bank officials informed our client that the said accounts were placed on a ‘No Debit Order’ following investigations and instruction from your commission and this is without notice to our client by either the bank or the commission. It is in the light of the foregoing that we urge you to use your good offices to vacate the ‘No Debit/Freezing Order’ placed on the said accounts.”

Patience in the letter stated that the operatives of the antigraft agency have refused to acknowledge her explanation

“Despite the foregoing, our client, who is a law-abiding citizen, has watched with surprise how efforts are being made surreptitiously to indirectly harass or harangue her and short-change her of her personal funds in breach of her fundamental human rights. We urge you sir, to kindly intervene to stop the untoward and wrongful actions of your officials to embarrass, inconvenience and short-change our client.”the letter said
Patience Jonathan during her husband's time in office had seven surgeries within a month for an undisclosed ailment in Germany. During a thanksgiving service in February 2013, she revealed that she lost consciousness for ‎a week during one of her surgeries.

Creative Director / Head Designer at Brides by NoNA LLC, Nneka Alexander for the second time in a row got featured in The Atlantan Magazine, Modern Luxury as a woman of Power and influence in it's September, 2016 edition.

UEFA Champions League: The clash of the football titans

It's been four wholly boring months of football since Real Madrid narrowly edged city rivals, Atletico Madrid in Italy's magnificent stadium, San Siro, to clinch Europe's elite title in a really pulsating affair. Well, that's that. Today begins another footballing battle as Europe best guns vie to determine who holds the continent's bragging rights come May next year.
I've decided to assess the major teams in this year's competition and see who really has a genuine chance to finish as Champions.
Beginning with Real Madrid, current defending champions. The decision to appoint Zenedine Zidane, a major club hero as coach brought with it an added aura of belief just as it brusquely transformed the club's fortunes. Although they were unable to prevent Messi and co ending as league champions, the team was definitely basking elsewhere in Europe and a fecund run which saw Ronaldo scoring the decisive last spot kick has now left the club with an added responsibility of achieving a feat no club has been able to since 1992 - back to back UCL cup wins. To thier credit, they've begun this season on a high and the rapturous applause given by Los Blancos aficionados when Ronaldo's name was announced on the team's sheet just before kickoff in last week's win over Osasuna shows just how much he's been missed. With a maiden international trophy added to his vast array of accolades following Portugal's Euro triumph and a fully optimized extended break, the talismanic striker would definitely be itching to guide the club to another UCL win and better his individual chances in his personal contest against Lionel Messi. The assiduity of this task has only been compounded by the club's transfer ban coupled with their decision not to sign any player in the last transfer window. The gauntlet has been thrown in, how will they respond?
Paris St Germain has always been a household name in Europe's elite competition barring the 2009/10 season when the club failed to qualify. Funny enough though, the club has never gotten past the quarterfinals stage, a conundrum which has only been exacerbated by the departure of pivotal striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic. A decent start to the 'life without ibra' season was cut short by a 3-1 defeat to Monaco and a surprise draw at home to St Etienne over the weekend. Ending as European Champions would therefore be an improbable task while more concern should be given to progressing from the group stages in a group consisting of fellow Europe strugglers, Arsenal, with this current team a far cry from what they were last year.
The announcement of Pep Guardiola as Manchester City's new gaffer brought along previously inexistent optimism and a renewed sense of belief to a team that has continually failed to impress in the competition since their debut in the 2011/12 season. The enigmatic coach, famously known for his 'no-nonsense' approach has a huge task, though, transfering premier league form to the Champions League. Four wins in four has left his side as the most in-form English team at the moment and qualifying out of a group which includes Borussia Monchengladbach, Celtic, as well as Barcelona - a poignant return for Pep - wouldn't be much of a problem. With English teams holding the unenviable record of miserable strings of results in Europe, as no English team has gotten to the semifinals since Chelsea in 2012, much has been asked of the club and coach. It would be interesting to watch how they respond to the occasion.

Barcelona is one club whose name reverberates success. The club have been crowned Spanish champions in three of the last four years and as Frank Rijkhard once commented, the club are "readymade" for success. However a dismal 2-1 loss to newly promoted Alaves over the weekend has once again highlighted the team's overdependence on Messi who was totally out of sorts. The arrival of Cillensen, Alcacer and Gomez to strengthen a team of champions already shows great intent from the club's hierarchy and Luis Enrique shouldn't find it hard advancing past the early stages of the competition. The club's front three famously known as MSN, though, must take a leaf from Atletico Madrid and build a reputation for teamwork and not individual brilliance if they are to finish up as Champions.
For the 20th consecutive year, Arsenal are going to be featuring in the Champions League, a record which it seems the club are very content with. The high profile arrival of Switzerland's captain Granit Xhaka and German defender Mustafi complemented by relatively unknown Rob Holding and Lucas Perez have definitely given gunners fans something to cheer on and while their start to the premier league season has been somewhat lethargic, the club has been presented with a golden opportunity of finishing in first position from the group stage, which will go a long way in avoiding the bigger guns, for the first time in years. With Wenger's contract possibly expiring at the end of the season, Champions League glory would definitely be a tremendous way to round up his Arsenal career.
Juventus are famed for undeniably being Italy's most successful team of the 20th century having won the italian league a record 34 times. However they have been unable to transfer their league success to the champions league having been runners up the most, 6 times, winning it last in 1995. The contentious departure of revered midfielder, Paul Pogba to United for a world record fee has left the old lady with a gap in midfield with Pjanic having been bought to fill the void, a task he has effectively handled so far. However with Juventus placed in a tricky group containing Sevilla, Lyon, as well as previously unbeaten Dinamo Zagreb, much attention would be placed on how Allegri manages to manoeuvre his team to safer grounds.
Bayern Munchen have always delivered both locally and in Europe and remain one of the most feared names in the footballing world. However it still remains a mystery how the club have only one Uefa title to show for the past one and half decade. A team which boasts of several renowned world beaters and a hugely savvy coach in Carlo Ancelotti should very well be expected to lead the pack as their 100% start to the German bundesliga has suggested. Progression from the group stages shouldn't be much of a fuss as such, with the only strict competition for top spot in Group D coming from fellow title aspirants, Atletico Madrid.
So that's it. The battle line has been drawn! Who rules Europe?

I hid in a car boot the first time I met Genevieve Nnaji – Mercy Johnson

___
Mercy Johnson is as real it it’s gets. She doesn’t hide her admiration for her peers especially Genevieve Nnaji. She opened up to City people magazine on the first time they met
___
"Ahh! The first time I met her, my friend took me there. When we got to where she was, I became nervous. I told my friend “no let me hide in your boot.” And I did. I got into her boot. (laughs) Can you imagine I came to see her and when I got there I wanted to run back. I jumped into my friends boot. So, when she came out of the hotel, I could not see her, I could only hear her voice. The 2nd time I saw her was on set. When she came down and I met her she said ahh! Mercy I like your movies and I started crying. I was in tears of joy. I said Aunty Genevieve, so you watch my movies. She was sort of embarrassed. Before I met her, she had already known that there was somebody who was crazily insane about her. She was really nice to me, receptive. And even whenever we work together she will correct me and say that thing you did, you could have done it this way''.

A tale to tell: Nigeria in its worst recession in so many years

“I was dumbfounded to see this place I have put so much investment in gone before my eyes in the space of a few minutes,” says Ada Osakwe, founder of The Nuli Juice Company, who opened her flagship store just two months ago. The owners of these businesses later learnt from the authorities that their landlord had been served with notices stating that the properties violated zoning laws. Osakwe explained that she had obtained permits from the state government to serve food at her juice bar and cafĂ© before opening her doors in June, and was not informed when she did so of any zoning problem with the property on which she had paid a year’s rent in advance.
Two days later, the state government announced it was removing "unplanned commercial centres" and “roadside restaurants” that have “distorted” government planning. “This is an . . . ongoing operation to sanitise the environment,” said the press release. The failure to serve notice to the tenants themselves led to fury on social media and a wave of support for the afflicted businesses. Uber Lagos added an option to its app to allow its customers to order juice deliveries direct from Osakwe. 30 staff face an uncertain future as their employers grapple with the costs of starting anew. Amid its worst economic crisis in generations, Nigeria can ill-afford to squander jobs. Official statistics released last month found that in the second quarter of this year 49.5 per cent of the youth workforce was “unemployed or underemployed”. Osakwe says she employed eight young people who earn 2.5 times the minimum wage. In Abuja, the capital, government is carrying out a similar campaign to remove illegal structures. Last week, it spray-painted 24-hour demolition notices on several businesses. Muna Okam, owner of Chloe’s , wrote on Instagram: “We’ve been in this building doing business for five years and you give us 24 hours notice at almost the close of business for demolition . . . how much more are entrepreneurs supposed to take?”The idea that gov't is one of the hurdles that ambitious young people must clear would no doubt be an affront to Buhari’s administration, which convened a “demo day” to promote entrepreneurs.
